BLB Laptop Testing - Support, Technology, and Security

The laptops in the Business Leadership Building for use by only Ryan College of Business faculty members provide the opportunity for secure, high-stakes computer-based testing of both small and large groups of students. The team members of University IT Desktop Services support this service by securing the environment, providing constant tech support and proctoring of exams.

Laptop Configuration

The laptops for RCOB testing in the BLB are configured with the following specifications.

  • Dell Latitude 3470 laptops with 14-inch screens, i5 processor, 8GB RAM, 128GB solid state drive
  • Extended laptop battery life to last several hours
  • Privacy filters
  • Windows 10 OS
  • Current versions of Office and other Microsoft products
  • All web browsers supporting Canvas, Pearson, and McGraw-Hill learning and testing environments including all lock-down browsers, Pearson, Respondus, etc.

Machines are optimized for testing with the Canvas learning management system. Machine configuration for a variety of testing technology scenarios and needs usually can be accommodated with appropriate advanced notice and consultation with our technical manager.

Security Features

All laptops are provided with privacy screens to ensure that onlookers cannot inadvertently or purposefully view others' testing materials. Additionally, proctoring by well-qualified, highly trained graduate students is offered as a free service to faculty using the laptops. Faculty also are encouraged to use the security tools available in Canvas, Pearson, and McGraw-Hill products for even greater lockdown of testing materials. Information about those learning management tools and their use can be directed to the staff at the Center for Learning Experimentation, Application and Research, CLEAR.

Important Note to Faculty

Faculty members are responsible for developing, thoroughly documenting and explaining to their affected students and enforcing their policies regarding cell-phone use and abuse, presentation of ID cards, and other possible cheating practices and outcomes.

Cell-phone-signal jamming or scrambling is NOT provided. Individual machine-based security cameras are NOT provided.

If you have any questions about the security of the laptops, please contact Abby Hart, Testing Coordinator, at SageTestingCenter@unt.edu.
